A model of community noise pollution

Richard E. Burke

Wyle Research Department Wyle Laboratories 128 Maryland Street El Segundo, California 90245

This paper describes a model of the major causes and effects of noise pollution in urban communities. The model is intended to be a preliminary guide to be used by communities in analyzing their noise problems and by academic institutions in conceptual izing the general problem of community noise pollu tion. The use of the model is illustrated by simu lating a fictitious prototype community using a computer program based on the model, and the simula tion is found to yield results which agree with empirical findings for similar communities: (1) air craft constitute the predominant source of community noise when an airport is nearby (8 miles) and (2) attitudinal factors play as large a role as physical ones in determining the degree to which people are annoyed by noise.
