Selection criteria and performance evaluation methods for peripheral array processorsComputer Science Department University of California, Los Angeles Los Angeles, California 90024 Peripheral array processors are a class of digital computing devices designed to serve as peripherals for large mainframe, minicom puters, and microcomputers. Through extensive parallelism and pipelining, peripheral array processors greatly enhance the capabilities of the host computer to process numerical data at a very high speed, particularly in simulation and signal proces sing applications. An overview of the peripheral array proces sing field is presented in this paper followed by a discussion of five different approaches to the performance specification and evaluation of these devices.
