This paper describes an experiment in constructing an expert system to aid the users of a simulation model. The expert system provides explanations in the form of background information and interpretations of various elements of a model. The approach to explanation is based on an attempt to simplify the model so that the user can think about the behaviour of a subsection of a model during a reduced number of time intervals.

Key Words: expert systems • systems dynamics • explantation • world model
