Department of Computer Science and UMIACS, University of Maryland, College Park, MD 20742 Trend is a two-dimensional cellular automata programming environment with an integrated simulator and a compiler. Trend has many unique features such as simulation backtracking, conflict recognition, flexible template design, and arbitrary space size. The general-purpose Trend language allows user-defined semireserved words, symmetrically rotatable statements, and other constructs specific to the parallel computation occurring in cellular automata programming. Trend is available freely both for Unix systems and the Java platform, and it can be used to study artificial life, massively parallel computing, models of natural phenomena, or anything else a user finds interesting.
