The influence on the power consumption of the cold milling machine and the load feature of the engine are firstly analyzed. The selection of the most effective control parameter to make good use of the engine power is studied theoretically. Based on these analyses, a simulation model of the cold milling machine is designed with the software AMEsim4.2. Whether the engine power utilization of the cold milling machine is reasonable or not is verified through simulations in which the adaptive power control system is used. The results show that using the work speed of the cold milling machine as the control parameter is reasonable and effective; the engine of the milling machine can be set to work at its rated power by the self-adjustment of the adaptive power control system. In this case, the rated power utilization ratio of the engine is improved more than 10.2% and the machine productivity is raised at least 6.32% in various working conditions. The theoretical basis and novel practical methodology can be employed in utilizing the engine power and increasing the machine productivity.

Key Words: cold milling machine • adaptive power • control parameter • simulation
